Below you will find tips on browsing, searching, linking and citing, as well as explanations of epigraphic and papyrological signs and abbreviations.
For best results with Greek characters, download and install a free unicode font that is extensive for ancient Greek (including acrophonic numerals and other symbols): e.g. New Athena Unicode, Cardo, Freeserif, Tahoma, Quivira.
Browsing the database
To browse association inscriptions and papyri, use the expanding menus on the right sidebar (by clicking on triangles to expand).
- By selected exhibits: Click on “browse by selected exhibits” and then choose the special exhibit (usually containing about ten inscriptions and/or papyri on a certain theme) you wish to view. You may choose to view all inscriptions with English translations in this dropdown.
- By geography: Click on “browse by geography” on the right sidebar and then expand the large geographical area (e.g. Asia Minor, Egypt and northern Africa) and click on the sub-region (Ionia, Fayum) you would like to view.
- By topics: Click on any of the expandable items under “browse by topic” on the right sidebar.
- Viewing the Greek: You will need to have any unicode font installed on your computer in order to view the Greek. For certain characters (such as acrophonic numerals) the following freely available unicode fonts are ideal: New Athena Unicode, Cardo, Freeserif, Tahoma, Quivira.
Searching the database
Use the search box on the right side-bar.
- Single words: Simply type the single word or locale in the search box on the right sidebar and press enter. For Greek locales, cities or towns, use the Greek transliterated form (e.g. Ephesos, Pergamon, Akmoneia), not the Latinized forms (e.g. Ephesus, Pergamum, Acmonia).
- Phrases or inscription numbers: Use quotation marks and type your phrase or inscription or papyrus number within the quotes: e.g. “slab of marble”, “IApamBith 35”, “AGRW 99”, “IEph 4337”, “PLond 337” and press enter.
- Searching Greek terms: Type the single term or phrase with or without accents using a unicode font. I have modified the search function so that square brackets and line-break symbols are ignored: e.g. searching for σιδαρέων will find σι||δα[ρέων], but at the same time searching for σι||δα[ρέων] will still find σι||δα[ρέων]. I have also set the search function to allow searches for the first or final portion of words (e.g. searching σιδα will find σιδαρέων and other words beginning with those letters; searching for αρεων will find σιδαρέων and other words with the same final letters).
- Searching transliterated Greek terms for association self-designations or functionaries: Transliterate the Greek term using ō for omega and ē for eta (if you don’t know how to type ō or ē, simply copy the letter here and paste it).
Linking options
There are a variety of methods you may use to link to items on this website (including using the rather lengthy address you find for each item). But the simplest and most succinct way to do so is to create a link which utilizes the search function (/?s=) and includes the PHI (Packard Humanities Institute) number, or TM (Trismegistos) number, or any other search result you wish to provide as a link. The user would then need to click on an item in the search results to view the details of the item.
So, for example:
- https://philipharland.com/greco-roman-associations/?s=264420 would bring the user of your webpage to a search result for PHI 264420 on our website, which is AGRW 133.
- https://philipharland.com/greco-roman-associations/?s=2462 would bring the user of your webpage to a search result for TM 2462 on our website, which is AGRW 295.
- https://philipharland.com/greco-roman-associations/?s=AGRW+295 would bring the user to a search result for AGRW 295 (Note: There are many inscriptions on this website that do not appear in the AGRW book and therefore don’t have an AGRW number. It may be better to consistently using PHI or TM numbers in links to this website).
- https://philipharland.com/greco-roman-associations/?s=Ephesos would bring the user to a list of all items that refer to Ephesos, including inscriptions from Ephesos.
