bibliography

Slab of marble recording a list of victories in athletic contests, found in the theatre. The beginning of the inscription is missing, so the precise sport of this athlete is not certain. However, there is one reference to fist-boxing (πυγμή) towards the end of the inscription, so he is likely either a boxer or a kick-boxer (pankratistēs). Toward the end of the inscription, there is reference to an athletic synod (synodos).

. . . the sixth time (?), he won the men’s competition at the Aleian contests at Rhodes, the boys’ competition at the Olympian contests in Ephesos, the boys’ competition at the Balbilleian contests in Ephesos, the boys’ competition at the Panhellenic contests at Athens, the boys’ competition at Tralles, the men’s competition at the Olympia, the young men’s competition (ageneiōn) at the Capitolinian contests at Rome, the young men’s competition at the Augustan contests at Neapolis, the young men’s competition at the Actian contests in Neikopolis, the young men’s competition at the Nemeian games at Argos, the young men’s competition at the Artemisian contests in Ephesos, the young men’s competition at the Apollonian contests in Hierapolis.  He also competed in the sacred contests in Peisa.  He won the men’s competition at the Deian contests in Laodicea, the men’s competition at the Chrysanthinan contests in Sardis, the sixth Olympian contests in Smyrna, which are run by the synod (synodos), the men’s boxing (pygmēs) at the Olympian contests at Hadriana, and the men’s competition for a second time in Peisa.  I was being honored by the men and by the Council.
