bibliography

Herm of Pentelic marble with the head of a beardless youth (138 x 20 x 17 cm; letter height: 1.0 cm). The functionary title epithetēs is otherwise unattested, it seems. The list of members in lines 18-36 includes: ten members of an Attic subdivision (deme), five freeborn persons (with named fathers), one freeborn woman, a man from Miletos in Asia Minor, and two men without reference to deme or father, which suggests they may be freedmen or slaves.

(Side A)
For good fortune!  In the year that Claudius Phocas of Marathon was leader (archon): The hymn-singer (hymnētēs) of the goddess of plenty, Belela and the gods associated with her, Publius son of Publius of the Phlya subdivision, who has honored the sacrificing associates (orgeōnes) and the vase-bearers and the priestesses, has had this inscribed. Priest for life: Eros son of Smaragdos of the deme Araphenas. The priestess in charge of dressing the goddess is Neikostrate daughter of Epiktetos of the deme Acharnai. The father (patēr) of the synod (synodos) of sacrificing associates is Euporos son of Euporos of Piraeus.  The Bouncer (hippos; literally “horse”) is Chryseros.  The planner (?; epithetēs) is Menophilos son of Menophilos of the deme Melite.

The sacrificing associates are: Hermeros son of Asmenos of Gargettios, Agesandros son of Philon of Daidalidai, Neikephoros son of Menodoros of Sounion, Kallistos son of Euporos of Trinemeia, Damianos son of Damas of Acharnai, Euphrosynos son of Philon of Daidalidai, Paideros son of Eros of Araphen, Priemigenes son of Priemigenes of Gargettios, Hyakinthos II son of Eutychidos, Menophilos son of Menophilos of Melite, Preimos son of Kallistos, Dionysios son of Dionysios of Eupyridai, Bakchis daughter of Eutychides (or, if a misspelling: Bakchos son of Eutychides), Epaphroditos of Miletos, Zosimos son of Zosimos, Euphrantas son of Eutychides, Dionysios, Theokosmos, Eutychas son of Eutychas.

(Side B)
Priestesses who have made great expenditures: Apollonia daughter of Zosimos of the deme Besa; Euphrosyne daughter of Philo of Daidalidai; Martheine daughter of Cornelianos of Oion; Areskousa daughter of Kittos of Aithalidai; Nike daughter of Attikos of Paiania; Glyke daughter of Hermeros of Gargettos; Cornelia Kleoneike of Marathon; Neikomo daughter of Marcianos of Paiania; Hypsiste daughter of Philo of Daidalidai; Glykera daughter of Athenaeos of Lamptrai, who was priestess for a second time.

For the same liberality (philotimia): Euploia daughter of Euporistos of Athmonon; Zosarion daughter of Rhodon of Steiria; Messia Demetria daughter of Cognitos of Prasiai; the priestess of Oraia for life: Tycharo daughter of Philo of Daidalidai; crown-bearer: Matrona; priestess of Aphrodite: Nike daughter of Menophilos of Melite; priestess of the Syrian Goddess: Hermais daughter of Eutyches.
