Honors by the Association of Sidareians for Chaeremon the Ambassador (26/25 BCE) Tralles area - Caria

Tralles area (Caria, Asia Minor — Pleiades map),

bibliography

Statue base with an honorary decree and an epigram. Found (in 1978) 35 km northwest of Tralles and 6 km north of the modern village of Karagözler. The epigram was seen and reported by the Byzantine historian Agathias (Histories II.17, pp. 62-64 in Keydall). The association likely drew its members from those who worked on an estate called Sidarous. These may be miners since the area was known for mining of iron (see SEG). An earthquake occurred in Asia in about 27 BCE, a few years before this statue was set up in Chaeremon's honor. See Jones 2011.

(decree)

The association of the Sidareians set this up for Chaeremon son of Theophrastos, who was ambassador to the senate and to the emperor Caesar concerning the second foundation of the city, and with success.

(epigram)
Once when his homeland was broken by an earthquake, Chaeremon rushed to Cantabrian land, rescuing his homeland.  Rapping himself around the knees of Caesar, he raised up proud Tralles, which had fallen.  For all this, his fellow-kinfolk prepared an image, so that this favor of a founder might be recorded on the base, as is necessary.   Menodoros (composed or inscribed this).
