Delos (Southwestern islands, Aegean Islands — Pleiades map), 94/93 BCE

Flat base of white marble (26 x 82 x 60 cm). Found in 1889 in the portico of Philip. In the Delos Museum in 1937 (inv. Ε 559). These groups may be temporary formations for the purpose of providing honors, rather than ongoing associations with an organizational structure. However, we do know that immigrants (esp. Romans), merchants, and shippers did regularly form more permanent associations on Delos and elsewhere, so this is also a possibility with some of these groups here.
The Athenian, Roman, and other Greek settlers (katoikountes) (?) . . . on Delos . . . and the merchants (emporoi) and shippers (nauklēroi) who sail into the trading-station (emporion) (?) . . . set this up for Aropos son of Glaukos from Piraeus, who was. . . supervisor (?) . . . on Delos, on account of his virtue, righteousness, and piety towards the gods. This was dedicated to Apollo, Artemis, and Leto.
The excellence and fame of your ancestors was established, Aropos son of Glaukon of Piraeus, by the estimation of numerous Greeks, countless Roman towns, and the renowned People of ancient Erichthonios (i.e. the legendary king of Athens). For along with continuing regard for others, these ones guard the ordinances, these ones preserve (?) ancestral order. By Publius (i.e. the poet).
