Athens (Attica, Greece and Macedonia — Pleiades map), 332/331 BCE (?)

A group of merchants and shippers (which may or may not be an ongoing guild) had recommended offering the honors for this immigrant from Sidon in Phoenicia. The Sidonian himself may also have been involved in trade. The immigrant and his descendents are granted the right to own property and to build on that property, since in theory foreigners needed permission to own property at Athens, at least in the Hellenistic period (cf. AGRW 10 = IG II² 337).
. . . Anagyrasios proposed: Whereas the merchants (emporoi) and shippers (nauklēroi) made known that Apollonides son of Demetrios, Sidonian, is a good man who also displays goodwill toward the Athenian People, the People resolved to praise Apollonides son of Demetrios, Sidonian, and to crown him with a gold crown worth one thousand drachmas on account of his virtue and goodwill which he has in relation to the people of the Athenians. The People also resolved to consider him, as well as his children, as a guest and benefactor of the people of the Athenians; to grant his right to possess property and a household according to the law; and, to have the clerk inscribe the decree of the People on a monument (stele) of white stone which will be set up on the acropolis, with the treasurer supplying . . . drachmas from the expenses to cover the cost of inscribing the monument (stele) for the People.
