bibliography

Fragment of a sarcophagus side. Copied at the beginning of the 18th century with the copy found in a collection in Smyrna. It is from Alexandria Troas or, less likely, Smyrna.

(missing lines) . . . Now if someone dares to throw the bones (?) . . . of other people into this coffin or to move the coffin to another place – the coffin which we prepared while living – that one will pay a fine of 1500 denarii to the city (polis) and 250 denarii to the dockworkers (phortēgion) of the harbor.  Also, anyone considering this will be destined for a nearby grave.
