bibliography

Description: Located in region 1, the amphitheater has three concentric circles of passageways on the ground floor, between which are radial rooms underneath the stairway ramps. In the southern half, seven of these rooms have been identified as having been used for cultic purposes by occupational associations (collegia): rooms 1, 6, 10, 59, 60, 64, and 69. Only one of the associations has been identified by name – the castanet-players (scabillarii) of room 10. Inscriptions from the amphitheater attest to the presence of the meeting places of a group involved in sacred rites (schola org[iophantarum]) and the association of ship owners (navicularii), but the locations where these inscriptions were found are not known and so cannot be coordinated with any of the rooms.
