PPolitIud 1: Petition from Andronikos concerning abuse by Nikarchos (October 7, 135 BCE).
(front side) To Alexandros, the leader of the corporate body (politarchēs) and to the corporate body (politeuma) from Andronikos, member of the corporate body. Submitted on the 12th of the month. Nikarchos–among those from the harbor (apo tou hormou)–deliberately provoked a dispute with me (10) in the street to the point where he verbally abused me excessively and shamefully. Subsequently, he also attacked me without reason in the presence of everyone, members of the corporate body (politai) and those of other tribes (allophylai; i.e. non-Judeans). For this reason, I request that, (20) after summoning him, you arrest him for this. Farewell.
(second hand) Year 36 on the 12th of Thouth . . .
(reverse side) Year 36 on the 12th of Thouth. Andronikos against Nikarchos.
PPolitIud 2: Petition from Petaus concerning release from prison (ca. 135 BCE).
(front side) To Alexandros, the leader of the corporate body, and to the corporate body from Petaus son of Philippos, a Judean (Ioudaios) who is being detained in the prison (phylakē). Since I am appropriately rebuked, having faced the trial of prison and (10) wasting away for a considerable length of time in a foreign land, and I do not have what I need, I request–earnestly begging you–not to overlook me but–if it seems right–that you assist me by arranging for me to be summoned from . . . prison (?) . . . (remainder lost).
PPolitIud 3: Petition (frag.) from Protomachos concerning ownership of a vineyard promised by Euphranor as part of a dowry
(front side) To the leaders of the . . . xth year from Protomachos son of Demetrios. I deliver to you a petition against Euphranor in the month of Pharmouthi in the 30th year . . . concerning what was confirmed by oath to me in which he conveyed to me part of a vineyard valued at 3000 silver drachmas as a dowry . . . (12 fragmentary lines with reference to a “contract” [suggraphē] on line 10) . . . (22) They also (i.e. the leaders in the role of judges) wrote down the legal document (hypographē) concerning the matters to be judged. But Euphranor, not abiding by these things, betrayed what was established by you according to your letter, which is appended along with a copy of the legal document (hypographē) and the (30) ancestral oath which he gave to me. Since, therefore, Euphranor did not allow me to claim the indicated part of the vineyard, nor did he do justice to me, having laid a charge against the . . . to take place, I request–if it seems right–that, after summoning him, you force him to do me justice in a way that follows . . . the legal document (hypographē). For after this happens, (40) I will be successful in gaining assistance from you.
PPolitIud 4: Petition from Philotas concerning an improperly dissolved marriage (January 12, 134 BCE)
(front side) Year 36 on the 19th of Choiak. Case concerning a marriage. We have decided to give orders on the matter.
To the leaders (archontes) from Philotas son of Philotas, member of the corporate body. In the current year I planned to engage Nikaia daughter of Lysimachos and her father swore an oath to give both her and her (10) established dowry to me. Besides this, after offering my consent not only with vows being shared but also settled (?) . . . according to the law and being declared, we departed. After a short time, Lysimachos had Nikaia engaged–(20) without reason–to another man before the customary notice of separation was received by me. For this reason, I request that–if it seems right–you arrange to write to the Judeans (Ioudaioi) in the village to give orders to Lysimachos in order that, if . . . it is as (30) I describe and, according to the law, he did fail concerning this, to force him . . . (remainder of front side lost).
(reverse side) Year 36 on the 19th of Choiak. Philotas against Lysimachos.
PPolitIud 5: Petition from Polyktor concerning purchase of a building (135-134 BCE)
(front side) To the leaders from Polyktor son of Polyktor, Macedonian belonging to Demetrios’ division of mercenaries on horseback. In the 36th year, I made an agreement with Sosotrates and I wrote a contract in the amount of 12 talents. But after these things, as the building (or: house) was sold by a certain Philagros, (10) Sostrates’ mother, Talous, gave a share to me. Through her, I also made an offer to purchase the building and . . . I arranged for the appropriate transfer of the building to me, and Sostrates . . . (remainder lost).
PPolitIud 6: Petition of Theodotos and Berenike concerning the death of a child (134 BCE)
(front side) To the leaders in 36th year from Theodotos son of Theodotos, Judean who is in charge of his mother, Berenike. I and the children whose father has died (literally: “orphans”, but likely children of Berenike) are presenting you with a case against Timotheos from Onne concerning the . . . (assault ?) . . . against the little child (or: slave; paidion) . . . (10) who died. Timotheos . . . (claimed ?) . . . that we have received a decision judged by the elders (presbyteroi) in the village concerning these matters and that we obtained a legal settlement (hypographē). Moreover, we have neither received a judgment nor have we been given a legal settlement (hypographē). Instead, Theodoros, Straton, (20) and Iakoubios, the three who were judges, after approaching my mother mentioned above and interviewing her, went away without producing any legal settlement (hypographē). Therefore, I request–if it seems right–that you order them (i.e. the village judges) to be summoned as well as Timotheos, and–(30) if this happened in this way–to make provision so that we might receive justice . . . (one indiscernible line) . . . but concerning other things (or: people) to make a decision . . . (four largely indiscernible lines). . .
(40) (hand 3 ?) Year 36 on the 22nd of Mecheir . . . (one indiscernible line) . . . They are (?) to be present on the 14th of Phamenoth to hold themselves ready concerning these things.
(reverse side) Theodotos to Timotheos.
PPolitIud 7 : Petition from Dorotheos concerning his charge over Philippa (134 BCE)
(front side) To the leaders from Dorotheos, member of the corporate body. In the 32nd year, my wife’s brother, Seuthos, stayed with me while he was sick, and I took care of him for a considerable period of time when he was doing very badly, spending a lot of my own resources. After this, receiving word that his daughter, Philippa, was put away in the . . . (prison ?) (one or two words missing) . . . (10) I sent for her and, while they were both living with me, Seuthes . . . (one word missing) . . . handed Philippa over into my charge so that she might be with me. He did this, first of all, on account of what I had spent on the both of them and, secondly, on account of his trust (?) in my wife. However, since his wife, Iona, has taken Philippa away and has settled her with her other sister (20) in Peenameus, I request–if it seems right–that you summon her to force her to offer me justice. Farewell.
In the 36th year on the 22nd of Pachon, we (i.e. the leaders) have decided to give orders on the matter. On the 24th (of Pachon), decision by the leaders: it is to be brought (to completion) on the 21st of Pauni.
(reverse side) In the 36th year in the month of Pachon, the case of Dorotheos against Iona. In the 36th year on the 21st (?) of Pauni, decision by the leaders. When Dorotheos settled against Iona and (30) . . . (ten remaining lines too fragmentary to translate).
PPolitIud 8: Petition from Theodotos concerning an unpaid loan to Plousia and Dorotheos (March 15, 133 BCE)
(front side) (second hand) In the 37th year on the . . . xth of Mecheir. We have decided to write to the Judeans in Teis . . . and, if not, to send in x days . . .
(first hand) To the leaders–in the 37th year–of the corporate body of the Judeans in Herakleopolis from Theodotos son of Theodotos, Judean among those who . . . serve as soldiers (?) . . . in the Oxyrhynchite district in the village of Teis in the same district. (10) In the 33rd year (138/137 BCE), when I lent 12 bronze talents at 24 percent interest (literally: 2 drachmas per mina per month) to Plousia daughter of Apollodoros–Judean but according to the contract a Gargarian–and to her son Dorotheos, who is also called Zenon–Judean but according to the contract a Persian of descent. They offered as security a vineyard of 1.5 arouras (an aroura was about 2735 metres squared) near Palosis in the Oxyrhynchite district, which I signed over to my wife, Philista. I renewed nothing, receiving wine in the 34th year (137/136 BCE). (20) However, in the 35th year (136/135 BCE) in the month of Mesore, while seizing what was mine, I took legal ownership of the property. But in the month of Epiphi, the Judeans (in Teis) who associated with them also (missing word?) . . . As I was convinced by their requests (i.e. he relented from taking ownership of the security), they resolved together . . . (several missing words) . . . after this they would pay in full in two years, including 6 talents during the month of Mesore in the 36th year (135/134 BCE) and 6 talents with the interest payments during the month of Mesore in the 37th year (134/133 BCE). Immediately . . . (one missing word) . . . (30) they would also bring from the produce of wine . . . (one or two missing words), they have paid me three metrētai (i.e. 3 x 40 litres = 120 litres) of wine and 1 talent, 4700 drachmas, but they have not paid back the rest. I request–if it seems right–that you arrange to write to the Judeans in Teis to force them to do me justice, or to have them brought in to you by your attendants (leitourgoi), so that I might receive justice. Farewell.
(reverse side) In the 37th year on the 22nd of Mecheir. Theodotos against Plousia and Dorotheos.
PPolitIud 9: Petition of Berenike concerning sale of the wet-nurse Rhome (June 20, 133 BCE)
(front side) To the leaders of the 38th year from Berenike daughter of Archagathos, Judean among those from Aphroditopolis. In the 37th year in the month of Phamenoth, Demetrios son of Philotas, Judean living in Peenpasbytis, sent me a letter making an agreement with an ancestral oath to pay (10) to me the agreed upon price of 8 talents to purchase a young female slave (paidiskēs), Rhomes, and the child of that slave in the month of Pauni in the same year. If he did not pay, he was to repay the debt in the next month of Epiphi together with an additional half of the amount and, for the royal penalty, 78 (?) silver drachmas (?) without any choice or appeal. But he was also to give a (20) monthly allowance to the nurse (i.e. to Rhome): clothing worth 2500 bronze drachmas until the 15th of Phamenoth; a Persian measure (aratabē) and two measures (metra) of wheat each month for four months; two liquid measures (kotylai) of olive oil each month; and, beginning in the month of Pauni, one Persian measure and two liquid measures of olive oil each month.
However, although these and other matters were included in the letter, Philotas (i.e. Demetrios son of Philotas) has paid nothing to me up to the present moment. Instead he has transgressed the (30) ancestral law (nomos). For this reason, I have been forced to experience the trial of living in a foreign place and have had to convey to you the letter of the other Judeans of Aphroditopolis. I request that–if it seems right–you order one of your attendants to escort Demetrios and, after summoning him, to force him to pay immediately and to pay in full the 12 talents, together with an additional half of the original; the 2500 drachmas; the provisions; (40) and, the other things in a way that follows the oath. Now concerning the royal penalty, seize the one who has transgressed in a way that shows hatred for criminals. . . (remaining five lines in a second hand, which specify date and other final matters, are too fragmentary to translate).
(reverse side) In the 38th year on the 6th of Pauni. Berenike against Demetrios.
PPolitIud 10: Petition from Ptolemaia concerning failure of Tetoys to complete the work of spinning wool (138/137 BCE)
To the leaders in the 33rd year from Ptolemaia. I gave Tetoys the dealer (kapēlis) a measure (stathmion; or: four measures) of wool so that it could be spun. From the agreed-upon wages, she received half. However, now she is not planning to complete the work and is instead (10) cheating me. I request that, after summoning her, you force her to return to me the rest of the wages she received so that I might receive justice. . . (remainder lost).
PPolitIud 11: Petition from Ptolemaios regarding failure of Arsame to pay for wine (133-132 BCE)
(front side) To the leaders from Ptolemaios son of Simon, Judean. I am being unjustly treated by Arsame, who is among those from the harbor (apo tou hormou). For, she owes to me one talent and . . . 3000 drachmas (?) . . . for the price of wine, but she is cheating me. I request that, (10) after summoning her, you force her to pay back . . . (remainder of front side lost).
(reverse side) In the 38th year.
PPolitIud 12: Petition from Nikanor concerning produce owed by Andromachos
(July 6, 135 BCE)
To the leaders of the 35th year from Nikanor son of Tryphon, Judean. Andromachos son of Nikanor, Judean, owes me produce worth 11 Persian measures (artabai) from the two arouras of land which my father leased for 32 years on the estate of Andronikos. He (i.e. Andromachos) gave (10) to me a letter with an ancestral oath and until now he has not paid me back. Although the time for paying back has passed and still more time has passed, and despite my demands for the produce from the . . ., the accused has taken no account but (20) instead is cheating and, moreover, the payment is not coming into my hands. But now, with this being revealed to you in the court (kritērion), I request that, after summoning him, . . . you force him to pay (?) . . .
(reverse side) In the 35th year on the 14th of Pauni. Nikanor against Andromachos.
