Base. The C. Julius Philippus in this inscription has sometimes been identified with the Asiarch Philippus (at Smyrna) mentioned in the Martyrdom of Polycarp (12.2).
C. Julius Philippus, procurator of the Augusti, father of Julius Philippus the senator, and praetor of the Romans. The synod (synodos) of those from Ionia and the Hellespont honored their own director of contests, financial auditor, and benefactor when the supervisors were Serapion II of Magnesia on Sipylos, the olympic victor, and Tib. Claudius Spercheios.
