bibliography

A large slab found in the harbor area and inscribed on two sides. If the list of donors to the construction of the toll office are themselves members of the fishermen and fish dealers, then there were both Roman and non-Roman citizens among the members of this occupation at Ephesos (cf. NewDocs V 5); however, it is possible that the donors were joining with the fishermen in contributing to the building and were not themselves members of the occupational group. The cubit was a measurement equivalent to the space from the elbow to the finger-tips. This toll office likely concerned civic tolls rather than imperial ones. On the other hand, a second-century inscription from Halikarnassos involves the dedication of a toll office for collecting imperial tolls (OGIS 525):

To good fortune! Kalokairos and Eutyches, agents of Marcus Aurelius Mindius Matidianus Pollio, the chief–contractor of the forty harbours of Asia, procurator of Augustus, and Bithyniarch for the second time, Asiarch of the temples which are in Ephesos, built the toll–office along with its stoa and all the decoration from the foundations and they (10) gilded the statue of Aphrodite.

(Side A) This was dedicated to Artemis Ephesia (?) … to the emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; … to Julia (?) …  Agrippina Augusta, his mother; to Octavia, the emperor’s wife; to the People (dēmos) of the Romans; and, to the People of the Ephesians. The fishermen and fish–dealers set this up from their own resources, having received the place by decree from the city and having built the fishery toll–office.
